Flavia, Toronto’s Female DJ DJing at Toronto Blue Jays Games

How did you start DJing at Toronto Blue Jays Games?

I’ve been DJing in Toronto for almost 10 years now. In 2019 (during the championship season 🎉!) I DJed a whole Toronto Raptors Game and half-time.

I always do my best at every gig, I make sure I’m professional, I’m friendly, energetic, happy, I play great music that people want to hear and didn’t know they wanted to hear, I put effort into my look, my music, my preparation etc. Because of this a company called Sole Power reached out to me to DJ a few sets on the on the Outfield Deck during Blue Jays Games.

So you’ve done it a few times?

Yes! I love it! I get to pack a lot of energy in a short period of time. I’ve DJed in June and have a few dates scheduled in July and August as well.

Have you DJed at any theme days?

Yess!!! I got to DJ at the Blue Jays Salsa Night! That was amazing!! I’m Colombian and love Salsa, it’s in my blood. To pull up to the stadium and hear salsa music playing outside and inside the stadium was amazing! Everyone was in a great mood, there were different activations around the stadium, musicians and DJs in different sections with people dancing salsa.

I was on the outfield deck so I DJed facing the fans and was on the jumbotron.

The energy was electric! The Jays were facing the Yankees that day, June 27, 2024, we were winning pretty early in the game and got 3 home runs!!! It was amazing!!!

It has to be one of my favourite events I’ve ever done!

How do you prepare to DJ a Toronto Blue Jays Game?

When DJing on the outfield deck there’s a 5 minute set before the game starts, a 2 minute set half way through the first inning and another 2 minute set halfway through the sixth inning. If the game gets extended there are more sets.

I make sure I prepare different sets and practice them ahead of time. I have an energetic 128bpm set for the first 5 minutes where I infuse my Latin flavour and different influences. For the 2 minute sets I have different crates or folders of different genres I can play. So I have a hip hop one, a dancehall one, a hype sports one, a Latin one etc.

I make sure all the songs are clean and they don’t mention other cities or countries.

I also make sure I dress and do my hair and makeup to be on brand with the Toronto Blue Jays. The Jays have an entertainment group called J FORCE, they’re brand ambassadors and provide entertainment in the Rogers Center as an integral part of the experience. I noticed all the female dancers have their hair done a certain way, beautiful makeup you can see from far and red lips. I make sure that I’m also on brand and wear red lipstick, beautiful makeup, have my hair and nails done as well.

We also have shirts provided by the organization to be on brand. For the Salsa Night we had a special Salsa Night shirt which was nice.

I also made custom headphones ahead of time to match the Salsa theme with flowers on them. I loved doing that!

Do you play any music specific for the players?

I do look at where the players are from and put music in my sets they’ll appreciate and gets them pumped up to play a great game.

For example, José Berríos is from Puerto Rico, Génesis Cabrera, Steward Berroa, Yimi García and Vladimir Guerrero Jr have a Dominican background, so I try to fit in a Dembow song or two in my sets.

There are other Latin players like George Springer, Leo Jiménez, Yariel Rodríguez who also could appreciate Spanish music so I put that in my sets.

I make sure I have variety to appeal to most of the players and fans. I generally like to pick music that’s very danceable.

You have original music, have you ever played some of your songs at a game?

Yes! If my song fits the set I will play it, YNQF the Festival Remix is one I’ve played a few times. It features Itz Nico P, Miginomics and Medylandia.

Like all songs I pick in my sets I make sure it’s clean, it fits the set and the mood, it’s energetic, danceable and fun!

What do you hope for the future?

I love DJing at Blue Jays games so I’m excited to do that more!

I would also love to DJ at more festivals and stadiums incorporating my original music in my sets.

I’ve also been working on a special project for the last decade which I hope to launch this year.

Stay tuned!!
