What kind of music do you play at a wedding ceremony?

What kind of music do you play at a wedding ceremony?

If you have a ceremony in a religious institution or building like a church for example, the church will have restrictions on what music can be played. Please ask the person responsible for the religious ceremony what’s allowed and not allowed.

If you’re having a ceremony outside or in an event venue for example where you have the freedom to pick the music, there are a few things to keep in mind.

The first is that there should be beautiful, nice music playing as guests are taking their seats before the wedding. This could be string quartet music, wonderful fairy-type instrumental music, R&B, Afro-beats, whatever resonates with you. This music should set the mood for a wonderful, romantic, ceremony. Think of it almost like the opening credits of a movie or something.

Next you should pick what songs the wedding party and the people getting married will walk down the aisle to (the processional). This will vary depending on what you want. There could be one song for the wedding party and then a different song for the person getting married walking in. Who’s walking in to music in what order will depends on what you envision for your big day and how traditional you are.

During the ceremony, there may be legal papers that need to be signed. If this is the case, choose a song for your DJ or A/V (Audio/ Visual) person to play during this time. Songs could include “Signed, Sealed Delivered (I’m Yours)” by Stevie Wonder, or a beautiful instrumental song. If you have other traditions like walking as a couple in circles a certain amount of times or other traditions, instruct your DJ on what to play.

If it is a specific cultural song please provide them with a YouTube link. This will make it easier for them to get and play, especially if it’s in a different language or in a different alphabet.

The last song of the ceremony will be when the newlywed couple walks back down the aisle together! This is called the recessional. This is normally a more upbeat romantic song!
